Switch : merupakan perangkat yg berfungsi untuk membuat dan memutuskan   kontak diantara lintasan transmisi dalam sistem komunikasi.

 

In every switching node,

• optical signals are converted to electrical form [optical to-electrical (O/E) conversion],
• switched electronically, and
• converted back to optical form [electrical to optical (E/O) conversion].

Switching systems that execute these operations are called optical–electrical–optical (OEO) cross connects

 

Problem On Optical Switches :

• electronic switching is highly reliable,
• it has many disadvantages, such as the dependence of switching hardware.
• upon data bit rate and transmission protocol, and high cost.
• power consumption of the E/O- and O/E-conversion operation.

MEMS Switches :

MEMS (Micro-electromechanical system) adalah  array cermin miring kecil yang digunakan untuk optical switch.
